Read for Good - hospital reading programme for children

‘Read for Good’ were thrilled to receive a grant of £5,000 from Duchy Health Charity to help bring the magic of books and stories to children in the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske.

The much-loved Read for Good hospital programme provides a unique and vibrant, mobile bookcase that can reach right up to a child’s bedside, with brand new, carefully selected books as well as professional storyteller visits.

The hospital programme has been running in 30 hospitals across the UK since 2010, providing hundreds of  thousands of books and hundreds of days of storytelling to children in hospital who are often lonely, homesick and scared.

Justine Daniels, Read for Good’s Chief Executive, said:

Books are especially vital in hospital, helping children of all ages, and their families, adjust to a distressing situation. Our books and storytellers create smiles and laughter at a time when a little distraction goes a long way.

We have been running in the Royal Cornwall Hospital since 2014 and have provided around 9,000 brand new books and reached thousands of children who are often lonely, homesick and scared.

It is thanks to organisations like Duchy Health Charity that we are able to do this and we can’t thank them enough.”

The service is loved by children, families and staff at the hospital.

Fiona Fletcher, one of the hospital school teachers said:

Read for Good is an integral part of our offering here at Treliske, we take the book trolley around the wards every week and the children are delighted to be able to choose their own book to keep. Read for Good supply us with brilliant books for all age ranges, they really do make a difference. Once a term we have a wonderful storyteller visit. Michael entertains and engages the children with his exciting and funny tales. He provides a fabulous distraction for them.”

The Read for Good programme not only enhances the well-being of these children and their families but also nurtures a love for reading, helping them overcome the challenges of illness and missed education, and Duchy Health Charity are delighted to have been able to support their vital work.
