Chairman’s Report 2021

‘It has been a year like no other’ is the way I introduced my report last year but now, in terms of Covid, we have had another similar year which has enforced changes to the way we have been able to ‘do business’. On behalf of the President, Michael Galsworthy, who is unable to be here tonight, and myself I would like to place on record our thanks and admiration of the work undertaken and achieved by the Trustees over the last year.

2021 is very special for Mermaids because one has just joined our Charity! She is the symbol for the Cornwall Breast Centre known as the Mermaid Centre and represents all the money raised over the years to keep our vital cancer unit up and running.

Eden Conference 2021

The twice postponed conference, due to Covid-19, on challenges around the introduction of Social Prescribing in Cornwall and now, the new Integrated Care System(ICS), became the focus of GP’s, Health Managers and representatives from the Voluntary Sector on Friday 1 October at the Eden Project.

The Cornwall Young Persons Project is designed to be community based and focused on outreach work. Over the last year that has proved challenging because of the COVID pandemic. But it has also provided opportunities to explore new ways to work and connect virtually.

Cornwall post-Covid-19: What’s the prescription for sustainable communities

We invited attendees to take part in a research webinar and to give us their comments and views as they learnt, with us, what the experts believe is the way to best deliver this area of healthcare.

Our Covid-19 Disaster Fund is, as you can imagine, has been very much in demand and is exhausted. For now the Charity will continue to monitor applications and you will receive an acknowledgement from Carol or one of our Trustees. The Board will decide whether to allocate more funds so please watch this space.

SOCIAL PRESCRIBING: PROFIT FOR PATIENTS & PRACTICES CONFERENCE

2019 sees two major projects underway: a conference for GPs and their teams on 2 October 2019 (fo lowing the July 1st introduction of the new contracts to include Social Prescribing) and a film to introduce a set of self-help teaching aids for practices to use in their internal training sessions.

‘How’s next door?’

We hosted a conference on Wednesday 13thFebruary at FifteenCornwall, Watergate Bay, with inputs from high profile national figures and also young people from our schools. 

Memories of a full life committed to her beloved Cornwall

A much loved and dedicated Duchy Health Charity Trustee, Mary Grigg, sadly passed away on 30th December 2018 after a short illness, leaving behind her devoted husband, Russell, as well as lasting  memories for all of those fortunate to have known her as colleague or friend.

The Trustees are sending their very grateful thanks and sincere condolences to Carol O’Brien, one of our longest and most dedicated Trustees and Member of the Grants Committee, whose husband, Mike, passed away on Thursday, 10th of May 2018, and who asked that the collection from his funeral be presented to the Charity.

Shine in Cornwall…in their own words

Before the Second World War, children born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus were not expected to live much past infancy. Medical advances and new surgical techniques started to change all this. The conditions began gaining more attention in the late 1950s and early 1960s and major treatment centres became established in Sheffield, London, Bristol, New York and Melbourne.

The Charity has awarded £10k towards a new programme at BF Adventure called ‘Head-out’ – for outdoor activities aimed at supporting young people with their mental wellbeing in an amazing natural environment that inspires, challenges and motivates people, to develop their life skills and to bring positive change to many in all walks of life.

St Petroc’s Society – Freshfield Telephone Helpline

For many people struggling with addiction, for their families and affected others who also have their own concerns and challenges as a result, the Freshfield helpline has offered advice, support and specialist knowledge for over 30 years. A gradual loss of confidence in the addict’s ability to change is something experienced by both addicts themselves and their families.

The Season of Awards

July sees the end of course celebrations and graduation ceremonies across the land and we are pleased to announce the winner of our first award presented on Friday 8 July 2017 to an outstanding student at Truro College.

Duchy Health Charity Newsletter

We launch our first Newsletter which describes the charity’s response to Sir John Tooke’s challenge: W(h)ither the NHS? Transforming patient care in Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly.

Brainy Breakfasts, Alverton Hotel, Truro

We hosted three breakfast meetings this autumn at the Alverton Hotel in Truro, with the support and encouragement from local and government agencies.

We lose an old friend and founding father

It is with great regret that we learnt of the death of Ian Hamilton who was one of the most influential past Trustees of the Duchy Health Charity and a co-founder of The Duchy Hospital.

Our new communications conduit

With more public facing programmes planned in the near future the charity had to make use of changing technology to ensure that our message became more engaging and easier to access.

New additions to armada at Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust

In the spring of 2016 The Duchy Health Charity (DHC) and Trinity House combined together to expand Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust’s fleet by 7 vessels after their donation of £30,000.
