Inspiration… Motivation… Graduation

We are very happy to announce the first of our Medical Awards for 2021 after a year of being unable to give out our awards because of the Covid pandemic.

The University of Exeter’s staff on the BMBS Course chose Emily Nicholson as the very worthy recipient of a student training award in Cornwall.

Emily is now 22 and hails from Edinburgh but selected Exeter as her University of choice because of the Medical School’s high quality of teaching, and of course, her love of Cornwall and all the county has to offer.

The first question is ‘What made you enter the profession?’

Emily’s answer proved inspirational… ‘From the age of 14 I wanted to be doctor and my grandmother told me many stories about her younger days as an aid-worker, serving in many difficult locations throughout the world.  She often found herself in cramped and very uncomfortable places like mud huts, tents or make-shift buildings, where she practiced her medical skills and saw the results of her knowledge and ability to work under pressure.

Her work in Bosnia particularly resonated with Emily and led to her applying to become a medical graduate.

The academic year is over and it is time for Emily to reflect and decide on the next steps in her life. ‘I might study ITU or Anaesthetics but, for sure, it will be in Cornwall’.

Emily’s award was presented at St Mellion on 24 November 2021 and she will be graduating in 2024.  We wish her every success in the years to come.

Emily said that she will be putting the money towards her planned travels next year.
